Where is the Horseshoe Curve?
It is located in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States and was completed in 1854. Designed by railway engineer John Edgar Thompson, it was a real turning point in the history of railways. The purpose of this project was to avoid having to build a tunnel through the mountains and to be able to ensure the safety of the route by reducing the degree of inclination. This avoided having to spend additional time and money. In 1966 it gained its status as a National Historic Landmark, but it was not until 2004 that it was considered a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
The Horseshoe Curve has been a major tourist destination for many years. In 1879 an observation park was completed alongside the track to cater for the high demand of tourists interested in visiting the monument. In the early 1990s a visitor centre and car park was built by the tracks, attracting hundreds of visitors a day who enjoy the spectacular scenery and panoramic mountain views.Nowadays, more than 50 passenger and freight trains travel along the Horseshoe Curve every day. As the train approaches the curve, an announcement is made over the public address system to alert travellers to enjoy the journey.
