According to the announcement made by the Spanish Government a few months ago, from today you can travel on some Renfe train journeys for free. This measure, established with the aim of promoting collective public transport, will affect the Cercanías, Rodalíes, Media Distancia and Ancho Métrico train services. In addition, you can get 50% off Avant and AVE trains. However, the measure does not include individual or single tickets, nor return tickets.
This measure, approved by the Council of Ministers, will allow the purchase of free travel passes for train travel from 1st September until 31st December.
How to get free train journey
To benefit from the 100% discount, at least 16 train journeys must be made between now and the end of the period of validity of the measure. In addition, as Renfe explains on its website, you can get 50% off Avant and AVE journeys lasting less than 100 minutes.
Those wishing to use the measure should be aware that, although the season ticket is free of charge, they must pay a deposit of between €10 and €20 when purchasing it. This amount will be refunded at the end of the validity period, provided that the minimum 16 journeys required by the measure have been made. With regard to Ave and Larga Distancia season tickets for frequent travellers, the 50% discount will only be available for certain journeys. Specifically, the following:

- León-Palencia
- Burgos-Madrid
- Burgos-Valladolid
- Ourense-Zamora
- Palencia-Valladolid
- Huesca-Zaragoza
- León-Segovia
- Segovia-Zamora
- Palencia-Segovia
- Medina del Campo-Zamora
